2nd April 2022 (1st April for USA) marked the beginning of the Vedic/Hindu New Year. First sunrise, after NEW MOON, of the lunar month of CHAITRA is considered as the New Year Day as per Vedic Astrology. The Vedic New Year Day is called Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (first lunar day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra).
The NEW MOON (amavasya) just before the Vedic New Year Day is the one in which Moon-Sun are both in the sign PISCES.
Then as the time progresses then during the next 15 days, Sun enters into the first sign ARIES and Moon reaches the sign LIBRA.
When
Sun and Moon become exactly opposite [Sun in Aries at X deg and Moon
in Libra exactly at the same X deg], that is the first FULL-MOON
(purnima) of the New-Year. Moon is in the Chitra Nakshatra at this
Full-Moon time that is why the first month gets the name CHAITRA.
This
year Sun is entering into the sign Aries on April-14 at 8:56 am
(April- 13, late evening as per US time zone). And the first exact full
moon moment will happen at 00:09 Hrs on 17 th April -2022 in {it will
be 16th April as USA time zone}. At that time Moon will be at 2 deg 35 min Libra and Sun will be at 2 deg 35 min Aries. [Here I am talking about sidereal Aries]. Moon at 2 deg 35 min Libra
will overlap with Chitra Nakshatra. So the first-Full Moon of the New
Year forms with "Moon in Chitra" and the first month is called Chaitra.
Chitra
is the nakshatra owned by Vishwakarma (the divine cosmic Architect),
so this is the time of New Creation. Sun will be in the beginning of
the Aries sign (that overlaps with Ashwini Nakshatra). Ashwini is the
nakshatra of being free-spirited and exploring new things, rejuvenation
and helping others.

- The Hindu New Year also marks the spring Navaratris, the nine days in which the Mother of the Universe is worshipped in the forms of Ma Durga. The ninth day is also Ram Navami when Sri Ram was born.
